Whistlestop Restaurant--Westlake, OH (Cahoon Rd) [$]

Intrigued by the name Whistlestop, both being big fans of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, we were excited to try this restaurant out.  We took a scenic route to this little establishment, set right next to the train tracks.  We were immediately charmed by the quaint building and the locomotive-themed decor.  After awkwardly standing in the lobby despite the very obviously placed "Please Seat Yourself" sign, we made our way to a booth by a window looking onto the tracks.  We were brought menus and hoped the train would pass by during our visit.  Unfortunately, it did not.  We had both looked at the online menu, although the font was so close together it was fairly difficult to decipher.  Pleased that their in house menus were reader-friendly, we browsed eagerly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grace:

Once the waiter gave us some menus, I feel like I was frantically flipping the pages and going back to certain items. I had my eyes set on a custom pizza, pasta, fish sandwiches, salads, and more! I was taking a lot longer than Shannon to decide--but I finally decided to try the Buffalo Garlic Shrimp appetizer, and a Caesar salad. I do realize I've gotten a Caesar salad for about 80% of our lunches, but it just always sounds good to me! We both got some glasses of H2O, and I knew I would definitely be getting a refill fairly soon because I've come to learn that buffalo sauce calls for tons of water.

I ordered the Buffalo Garlic Shrimp because I thought that sounded incredibly interesting. I am, quite literally, obsessed with buffalo sauce, food with garlic, and shrimp so the Buffalo Garlic Shrimp appetizer sounded so promising. I had never thought to combine all three things before, but now I know that I can easily create something like this at home! It was a fairly priced appetizer--$7.99 for seven shrimp. The shrimp were sauteed to perfection. I thought the garlic taste would have come from garlic powder, but I saw that minced garlic was sprinkled all over the dish when my appetizer arrived. The buffalo sauce was drizzled over all seven shrimp and I found myself cutting the tails off first, then sticking a fork into both sides of the shrimp; therefore, smothering the dish's excess garlic and sauce until I believed I had acquired the perfect ratio of buffalo and garlic.

I had the waiter bring out my appetizer and my salad at the same time, since I didn't want to be eating when Shannon wasn't. I had asked the waiter if I would be fine with just getting an appetizer and the smaller sized Caesar salad, and he said I would have had to have taken the bigger portioned one home. That being said, I got the smaller one because I'm really, really bad at remembering to eat leftovers. Plus, salads are not the best things to take home because if they already have the dressing on, wilting occurs. The salad was a pretty generic Caesar salad, but I still wanted more! The waiter said the small was a lunch size, but apparently I had the appetite of a NFL player today because after finishing my Caesar salad, I was still semi-hungry. I told Shannon I would give her a dollar if I could steal one of her onion rings, but she said she would willingly give me one for free. Well, one turned into two. I was a bit hungry. The onion rings were so golden and crunchy! We both had to be ladylike and cut the huge Os with our forks and knives.

Whistlestop was a really cute restaurant and the fact that it was right next to the train tracks was so fitting! It definitely made me feel some nostalgia for my childhood, and made me want to watch Fried Green Tomatoes immediately. I will definitely be back to try some of the other menu items I was finding it so hard to decide amongst.

Shannon:

During my research of nearby restaurants I came across Whistlestop Restaurant and knew right away that we had to go to this place.  I glanced at the online menu, but like we said, it was very difficult to read, but the cute pictures solidified my decision.  As soon as I told Grace, I had to tell my sister, Fried Green Tomatoes being her favorite movie and all, which made me even more excited by her enthusiasm to read about the restaurant.

I picked up Grace and we drove the straightforward route down Lake Rd., admiring the houses along the way.  We traveled a short distance down Cahoon, and as soon as we saw the railroad tracks, there was Whistlestop, placed right beside like a station.  We entered the restaurant, delighted to see their was no skimping on train decorations and miscellany.  After our brief stint by the door we bashfully sat down, noticing several people glancing at us strangely.  Shortly after we seated ourselves our waiter came over with menus and asked for our drink orders.  He went off to get our water while we browsed the menu, where I was pleased to see a Grilled Eggplant sandwich was offered.  Ordering this with onion rings in place of chips,  I was excited to have a vegetarian sandwich option other than a veggie burger or portabello mushroom cap.

We chatted for about fifteen minutes until our food arrived.  My immediate reaction to the plate placed in front of me was due to the four massive onion rings that took up the entire right side.  A pickle leaned on a garnishing pile of shredded lettuce, and my sandwich sat in the middle, the top of the bun on the side to display the heaping contents.  Starting as I usually do with the pickle, I crunched away in order to make room for ketchup.  I selected the smallest onion ring to eat first, which was about the same circumference as my water glass.  The onion ring was as delicious as it was aromatic, although onion rings are always a bit tricky for me, so I cut up the next one to keep the onion in place with its breaded exterior.  Not wanting to fill myself up before starting on my sandwich, I placed the bun on top and cut it in two more manageable pieces.  I set it back down after my first bite, however, because it was still very hot.  I allowed it to cool while sipping some water, and then tried again.  The sandwich contained roasted red pepper, red onion, mushrooms and melted cheese on a Kaiser bun.  The red pepper and onions were the most prominent feature other than the eggplant itself, giving the sandwich its strong smoking grilled taste.  The eggplant was juicy and buttery, and the cheese was perfectly melted.  Although the sandwich proved very difficult to eat because with every bite more contents slid out the other side of the bun, making me very glad I cut it in two.  The flavors were satisfying, and I enjoyed having a different variation of a veggie sandwich, however, the vegetables seemed to have been grilled in overwhelming amounts of butter and oil.  My plate had a little river running through it, and several times I blotted the bottom of the soaked bun.  If I ordered this sandwich again, I would perhaps ask to have the vegetables grilled in less oil, or else I would blot the contents thoroughly before eating.

Whistlestop really was adorable and I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant.  The drive to and from was enjoyable and relaxing, and the service is friendly.  I would like to return on a warmer day, I would probably just amend my order a bit to alleviate my oil intake.  I think that is a manageable goal in order to return to such a cute place.

The South Side--Tremont, Cleveland (W. 11th St.) [$$]

On this blistering cold spring day, we journeyed to Tremont for our highly anticipated lunch.  Going basically the same route that we took for our trip to Fat Cats, we were already familiar with the area of our destination.  After finding a close parking spot, we walked toward the tall brick building with huge front windows.  Once we were nearer to the front we noticed the repeating decals of "The South Side" along the far right of the windows.  We entered into a bustling lunch crowd.  The hostess asked if we wanted to be seated at a high top by the bar or in the other room, to which she pointed to a side enclosed porch.  We opted for the porch, in attempts to pretend it's nice outside and be surrounded by windows.  We were very surprised how warm this room was considering most of the windows were sliding doors.  The opposite walls were brick, like the outside, and there was a great wooden fireplace and two plasma TVs.  The hostess told us we could sit anywhere we wanted, so we weaved to the back corner to the table with our names on it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grace:

Once we chose our seats, the hostess gave us two menus--intricate booklets with leather covers and the pages tethered together by screws. I immediately flipped through it, and we had previously discussed how we were up for a little day drinking, so I searched for a good cocktail. I chose the "Lil 'Early'...Taste of Summer" cocktail that was concocted of Stoli Oranj vodka, Muddled Lemon, Simple Syrup, and soda water. I expected my cocktail to be the color orange, but was surprised to see it looked exactly like my water glass. I really didn't want to get the two drinks confused and end up accidentally chugging my cocktail if my meal was spicy! Luckily, that didn't end up happening, and I kept the two drinks on either side of the top of my plate. I spritzed some lemon juice from a slice hanging on the rim of the cocktail glass, and it made it taste...well, even more summery. I'm not one to opt for citric beverages (even though I work at a smoothie place) but this is the first week of spring and I was feeling a bit anticipatory for summer.

I was deciding between multiple items featured on the menu, such as the vegetable patty (which I figured Shannon would get) and the pizza pot pie with mushrooms and onions. My eyes kept going back to the blackened tilapia sandwich, and I'm glad that is what I chose, because whenever I have tilapia at home, my mom always prepares it the exact same way every single time. It was nice to have tilapia with a different flare. The sandwich consisted of shaved romaine, red onion, tomato, monterey jack cheese, and citrus aioli. The contents of the sandwich were placed on a hoagie ciabatta roll. Whenever a sandwich has raw onion, I usually end up taking it off and placing it on the plate, but this time I only took off a few and kept the rest on. Instead of the chips the sandwich came with, I got a side Caesar salad for an extra two dollars. When I finished my sandwich, my fork made its way to the salad and I was pleasantly surprised by the anchovy-style Caesar dressing. The parmesan cheese didn't seem that fresh, however, because it was a little hard, but it was still very good. I even told Shannon I wanted more.

When we got up to leave, I noticed the one plasma TV by the entrance way into the porch room and the fact that it legitimately had a frame around it. I thought that was a nice touch and it was a way of integrating art and technology. As if every scene on that television, whether it be a basketball game or a commercial, created a new "painting" with each fleeting moment. Anyways, I digress--I just thought it was cool. I cannot wait to come back to The South Side and sit on either the porch or patio when it is finally nice outside. I loved this place and I can't wait to try more menu items when I'm eating red meat again! :)

Shannon:

Since Grace had an interview on Tuesday and we postponed lunch until today, I was very excited to go on our weekly outing at last.  Having already checked out the online menu, I had an idea of what to expect from The South Side, however I was surprised we had not already visited this restaurant since I have researched Tremont several times for another great place to go.  Once we arrived, I was particularly taken with the very tall windows in the front.  It gave this very welcome and open feeling to the place, along with letting in a lot of natural light.  We entered into a bar area with high top seats and bar seating.  The ceiling was lined with golden-brown shaded hanging lights that cast a nice warmth onto the dark wooden tables.  Having told the hostess we wanted to sit in the adjacent room, she brought us to the adjacent room which was separated by a door, presumably to keep the higher blasting heat in the enclosed porch.  I had seen the table I wanted to sit at when she originally pointed to the room; it was a table in the corner of two walls of windows.  Once seated, there was a patio area outside to my right.  There were chairs stacked under snow piles and pushed against a back brick wall that painted and repainted over due to weathering.  Behind me was a pathway from the front of the restaurant that culminated in an archway between two high hedges.  Both Grace and I longingly talked of sitting outside upon our next visit, weather permitting.

Grace and I had decided ahead of time that we would be having a drink with lunch today.  We ruminated over the cocktail menu for quite some time, and I finally selected the Afternoon Delight, which consisted of Stoli Strasberi Vodka, a splash of lemonade and soda, pineapple juice and strawberry puree, fresh lime, served in a tall glass.  The strawberry puree was what really sold me in the description, and once I got to try it I was certainly delighted.  It was a fruity mixture that was not overpoweringly sweet and the puree gave it a lovely fading pink tinge.  After ordering and receiving our drinks we gave the entree menus our full attention.  My choices were between the Vegetable Patty sandwich and the Portobello wrap.  I ultimately decided on the Vegetable Patty because I wanted a burger more than a wrap, as well as having portobello fairly often.  The Vegetable Patty comprised of roast vegetables, black beans spinach, bean sprouts, topped with sun-dried tomato spread on a challah bun.  This all sounded delicious, however the portobello wrap had basil aioli, which sounded divine, so when I ordered I asked for this on the side.  I chose to have fries instead of kettle chips, and our orders were on their way.

When my sandwich arrived it was very captivating.  The plate was assembled very aesthetically; patty on half the bun and the other half piled high with spinach and bean sprouts.  Fries taking up the other side of the plate, sprinkled with coarse grain salt, and finished off with a bright green pickle, all placed upon a bright white plate.  I noticed the waitress took my order of the aioli to mean I did not also want the tomato spread, but once I tasted the aioli I was no longer disappointed.  The basil was so poignant and the spread was perfectly creamy, I immediately spread this onto my vegetable patty.  The patty was black bean based with chopped vegetables, the most prominent being corn.  Each bite contained different tastes and each one was just as amazing as the next.  The fries were golden and crispy, just how I prefer them.  The waitress said they were house-made, and they were certainly an outstanding accompaniment to my sandwich.  I was glad I asked for the aioli on the side, since I figured the two ounce cup was a larger portion than would have been spread on the bun.  I applied aioli to each bite much like I planned to use the ketchup I put on my plate.  I stratigically ate half the patty, finished off most of the fries, and saved the rest of the sandwich for last.  There was not a speck of aioli left when I was done.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at The South Side.  I cannot wait to go back and sip Afternoon Delights on the patio and soak up the sun.  The staff was extremely friendly and the atmosphere and decor was incredibly cool.  Check this place out, immediately if you can!

Light Bistro--Ohio City, Cleveland (Bridge Ave.) [$$$]

Light Bistro brought us once again to Ohio City, so we parked on a side street and marveled at the amazing houses on the walk to the restaurant.  Once inside we were greeted and seated by a friendly wait staff that always checked up on us throughout our meal.  Mulling our options over a delicious looking menu, we soon pinpointed what we would be enjoying, and our adventure was on its way.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grace:

After finding a spot to park for Light Bistro, we walked around the same streets we had walked when going to Hecks Café. After looking at Light Bistro’s menu online earlier this morning, I already had a good idea of what I was going to order: the Light “Boxed” Lunch which was comprised of a soup, salad, and a sandwich! However, in case the soup of the day had meat that wasn’t fish meat, I knew I had to wait and see. We were promptly seated and told of the day’s specials. My ears were delighted to hear of the soup of the day: a shrimp and corn chowder.

I remarked on how great the restaurant smelt as we studied the menu a little more. I actually did go through with my original plan. I was thinking the crab cake sandwich would be an acceptable choice for my sandwich portion of the three part meal, but the waiter said the crab cake and the tilapia wrap were not allowed to be included in the Light “Boxed” Lunch. I’m assuming it is because the crab cake wouldn’t fit in the three-sectioned rectangular box-plate. I ordered the shrimp and corn chowder, a Caesar salad, and a grilled cheese. When our food came, my jaw dropped at my meal’s presentation. It was so cool! I was thinking the chowder would have come to the table separately, but all three parts of my meal were presented to me at once.

I started with the shrimp and corn chowder because that is what I was most excited for, and it was so hot that I went over to my grilled cheese sandwich, two compartments down. The chowder comprised of corn, shrimp, celery, and potatoes, all in a creamy base. The grilled cheese sandwich consisted of three cheeses: American, provolone, and parmesan. The bread was whole wheat, with ripples from the grill, like a panini. I thought the cheeses blended together very well, although I do have to say I prefer the grilled cheese I had at 87 West. The Caesar salad was a delectable mixture of romaine lettuce, roasted garlic Caesar dressing, brioche, and tomato preserves. I had never seen tomato preserves on top of a Caesar salad before, but I spread it around and savored every bite. It was almost like a tomato chutney and had traces of cinnamon.
I left Light Bistro SO satisfied, and I will definitely be back to try some of the awesome-sounding cocktails. From the simple décor, to the complimentary brown bag of baguette pieces with the aesthetic butter presentation, to the freshly baked chocolate chip cookie that Shannon and I shared—I found Light Bistro pleasing to all senses. I cannot wait to return!

Shannon:

I originally chose Light Bistro as a back up when Grace and I were deciding if we wanted to visit the West Side Market Café on a Market day.  Having browsed their menu a few weeks back, I kept it in mind for the next time I chose our lunch location.  When I looked up the directions, I found it was a block away from Heck’s Café, so when we were parking, I found the same street I parked on for our Heck’s visit.  We walked to the bistro exclaiming about the beautiful old houses along the way.  Happily reaching the restaurant and escaping the biting wind, we were seated next to a window overlooking the street we just came from.  Light Bistro was full of dark woods and brick walls.  There were attractive paintings hanging that were for sale.  Heavy curtains tied up in bronze colored beads were covering the side windows, and the booths were lined by boxes of assumedly fake, but shocking green grass that brightened up the earth-toned atmosphere.

Merely glancing at the menu reminded me of what I wished to order the first time I checked out the menu online, the Fried Green Tomato BLT, without the bacon.  The sandwich came with a choice of a side, however I requested both the pomme frites and the cole slaw.  Between ordering and receiving our food, we were brought a paper bag of a sliced little baguette and butter that fit snugly in what appeared to be a candleholder.  Before applying the butter to our bread, we marveled at how perfectly it was held in the little glass container.  We each had two little slices, and saved the rest of our hunger for our food.  During the wait I excused myself to use the restroom, which I was amazed to see had a wooden chest of rolled up terry cloth towels attached to the wall against the sink.  I was so surprised to see this fancy accommodation and grew excited to wash my hands.  After using my towel, I tossed in into the designated towel basket, and headed back to the table.

Soon our food arrived, and we were both wowed that the “boxed” lunch Grace ordered actually came in a box.  My sandwich and cole slaw were on one plate, and my shoestring fries came on another.  After snapping pictures, we eagerly dug in.  I sampled a few of the thin fries, which were salted and peppered to perfection.  Getting to my sandwich, I took a bite from the corner of the whole wheat bread’s seed covered crust.  I closed my eyes and let the explosion of flavor wash over me.  It had been a while since I last had fried green tomatoes.  My sister occasionally makes them, a favorite of hers since they share the title of her favorite movie.  These were crisply breaded and paired with bibb lettuce and garlic aioli, which was buttery and added the perfect amount of zest.  The bread was toasted and crunchy, and I cannot imagine how anything could have made this sandwich any more heavenly than it was as I devoured it.  The cole slaw was made entirely of white cabbage and was dressed in an overpowering vinegary dressing, which was unfortunately a bit too much for my taste buds.  I focused my all on the sandwich and occasionally ate a few fries, ultimately taking most of them home with me.  Towards the end of our meal, our waiter brought us a warm and gooey chocolate chip cookie to split.  We were both so full we did not even want to walk back to the car!

Light Bistro was delightful, though neither of us would consider our lunch a light lunch, with how full we were upon leaving!  I will definitely be making my way back to Light Bistro in the future.  There were a few cocktails I’d like to try, and that sandwich was far too delicious to only have one time.

Vintage House Cafe--Avon, OH (Detroit Rd. near Avon Commons) [$$]

Due to Grace's exciting interview on Tuesday, we postponed our lunch outing until Thursday.  We trekked further west than usual, and arrived in lovely Avon.  After several wrong turns, we arrived at the adorable and picturesque Vintage House Cafe.  Reminiscent of a little English cottage, it was perched at the edge of a larger property (that would be sensational to tour in warmer weather).  Upon entry, we were in a little niche of knick-knacks and wine accessories.  We were seated in the quieter of two rooms, which the hostess told us to liven up, or try our best.  The hostess also noticed us admiring the glass lamps hanging from the ceiling and she told us her son is a glass blower and he made all the glass lamps in the cafe.  She was extremely smiley and friendly, as was the waitress who then came to take our order.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grace:

Growing up in a quaintly decorated home, I was completely comfortable inside Vintage House Cafe. I loved the previously mentioned hanging lamps, the fireplace and mantle, and the optically-teasing brick exposure in certain places on the walls. Both of these elements gave the cafe a very personal and charming feel. The waitress came over to tell us about the day's special, which included egg salad on a croissant, a cup of tomato basil soup, and two blueberry scones. I haven't had egg salad in years, so I could not resist this deal.

At first, the waitress brought me chicken salad on a croissant and I normally wouldn't make a big deal about it and would eat it anyways, but I had given up meat a few weeks prior so I wanted to stay true to that. She apologized and was very accommodating and quick to bring me my egg salad. Shannon had also gotten tomato basil soup, but she added her saltine crackers to the cup and I ate them separately. We both devoured our soups in no time, all the while commenting on how fresh the tomato chunks were.

My egg salad was just what I was hoping for! There were, however, a lot of onions in the egg salad mixture, which made me weary about how my breath would be later. Despite all the onion, it was still so great, and the dill was a subtle seasoning that wasn't overpowering. I was debating how I would conjure enough willpower to consume the two blueberry scones after such a filling meal. The scones came with a creamy frosting that they were to be smothered in. Even after I was done with the first two parts of my meal, I noticed the scones were still warm and when I bit into the first one (about fifteen minutes later), I couldn't help but sigh in pleasure. I needed to share this experience with Shannon, so I offered her half of my second scone.

When we were done with our food and done paying, the waitress told us to peruse the upstairs of the building. I noticed all the funny wall decorations they had lining the stairwell. There was a tea room to the left at the top of the stairs and we couldn't help but think of the future and having birthday parties for our little girls up there someday. Okay, I'm getting ahead of myself, but it was adorable and decorated in a Victorian manner my mother would love. There were a lot of charming and feminine items for sale, and I really wish I had extra money to spend on one of those St. Patrick's Day wine stoppers I was so greatly admiring.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shannon:

Walking into Vintage House Café reminded me of playing dress up and having tea parties with my sister and my mom.  The decorations were adorable and artistic.  Learning that the hostess’ son crafted the lamps made me wonder if the other decorations were also created by local artists.  I particularly liked the hinged room divider on which a country house was painted.  When our waitress first brought us our menus, I noticed that the wrap I saw on the online menu was not listed.  When she came back to take our drink orders, I asked her about the Dange wrap.  She promptly left to check with the kitchen if they could make it, saying it was both delicious and very popular.  She returned with the good news that the kitchen had all the ingredients to make it.  Instead of French fries, I upgraded to breaded mushrooms, and I tacked on a cup of the tomato basil soup to start.  I couldn’t wait for my meal to arrive.

Grace and I had time to chit chat about her plans for her boyfriend’s birthday that night until our soups came and we were focused on spooning the hearty and creamy broth into our mouths.  The tomato chunks and chopped basil were both proportionately perfect to the amount of broth, and the side of saltine crackers was a salty and crunchy companion.  We slurped these up just in time for our entrees to be set down in front of us.  My wrap was poised so half of it was facing up, so I first saw how colorful the contents were.  Mandarin oranges, shredded lettuce, grapes, almonds, and toasted coconut all wrapped up and drizzled in an orange mimosa vinaigrette.  This wrap was unlike anything I’ve ever had.  The contents were mostly sweet, though the almonds added a slightly salty and savory component.  Everything was crisp, despite the copious amounts of delicious dressing.  The breaded mushrooms paired wonderfully, as a saltier companion.  I finished half the wrap and then devoured the mushrooms before starting on the second half.  The dressing did not want to stay inside the wrap, but I improvised by dipping the wrap in the pool of vinaigrette on my plate.  There were no leftovers coming home with me today!

After lunch, Grace and I checked out the gift shop upstairs.  The gifts and handcrafted items for sale started on the stairway’s first landing, so we browsed as we ascended.  There were cute owl clutches, feathery hats, crepe flowers, wine accessories galore, and more blown glass lamps.  The high tea room was adorable and beautifully decorated, definitely somewhere I would love to sip chamomile and nibble on a cucumber sandwich.  We made our way through the three rooms and back down stairs again, talking of tea parties we used to have growing up.  Before walking to the car, we walked around behind the café to see there was a little patio that beckoned for us to come back in the spring.

Vintage House Café was a darling place to eat.  It certainly cheered up the rainy Thursday we were otherwise having.  I cannot wait to go back and sip tea in spring.
